Why is a Students Visa Important for Studying in Canada
Canada is the world’s third most popular destination for international students pursuing higher education abroad. Indian students must secure both a Student Visa and a Study Permit to study in Canada. Both are crucial as the student visa allows students to enter Canada and the study permit is what they need to study in a Canadian institution.
Types of Canadian Student Visa for Indian Students
A Study Permit is the primary type of visa for students intending to study in Canada for more than six months. It allows students to stay in Canada for the entire duration of their course of study.
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) speeds up the study permit process for international students who meet specific criteria, provided by Immigration and Citizenship (IC). Most SDS applications are processed within 20 days.
Non-SDS is the general visa process for studying, working, and living in Canada. The Non-Student Direct Stream (NON SDS) has a longer processing time (up to 15 weeks), more flexible financial requirements, and is open to all international students.
The Certificat d’Acceptation du Quebec (CAQ), or Quebec Acceptance Certificate, is necessary for most temporary foreign workers and students planning to live and study in Quebec. Students can submit their CAQ to the Canadian government to obtain their study permit.
Students intending to study in Canada for less than six months, only require a Visitor Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) rather than a Study Permit.
